HomeHuman population is growing now like never before. We are now adding one billion people to the planet every 12 years. That's almost 4 times the population of the United States. The United States itself may add 100 million people in just the next 40 years. So many problems, from the 800 million hungry people mostly in third world countries, to the depletion of our resources, to Americans stuck in wasteful lines of traffic, have their roots in this growing population. This site, and this institution are dedicated to raising awareness about how todays problems are tied to the growing world population. In fact, it's hard to think of a single world problem which will be solved more easily by adding another 3 billion people to our population within 40 years, or perhaps 12 billion within the lives of today's children. The biggest assumption that has crept into writing and talking about all these problems is that we can do nothing about population growth except accomodate it. Whether by consuming less, living more efficiently, building more sprawling suburbs, or packing people into highrise cities, most discussions just focus on which form of accomodation they think is better. Let's ask whether we want to accomodate to the assumed "unrelenting" force of population growth, or whether our efforts could be better spent in taking on the many possible tasks of managing our own species' growth, and caring for the resources of our beautiful planet. To understand why so few people are talking about this, visit the Great Taboo. To Find out how much there is that we can do about this, please check some things you can do. And for discussion of our current projects, check the Projects & our blog. If you are interested in working on a project, some internships are available.
